What is an Hourly Wage?
An hourly wage is the amount of money an employee earns per hour of work before taxes and deductions. It's a common pay frequency used to express compensation for jobs that are paid on an hourly basis. Knowing your hourly wage helps you determine your earnings for each hour worked, which is crucial for budgeting, comparing job offers, and understanding your income on an hourly basis.
How to Calculate Hourly Wage
It all depends on how often you get paid. Let's look at a few different scenarios and break down the calculations:
Daily Wage to Hourly Wage:
To convert a daily wage to an hourly wage, just divide your daily rate by the number of hours you work in a day. Let's say your daily wage is $100 and you work eight hours a day. Your hourly wage would be $12.50 (100 ÷ 8).
Weekly Wage to Hourly Wage:
If you get paid weekly, just divide your weekly rate by the total number of hours you work in a week. For example, if you get $500 a week and work 40 hours a week, your hourly wage would be $12.50 (500 ÷ 40).
Biweekly Wage to Hourly Wage:
To convert a biweekly rate to an hourly rate, divide your biweekly rate by the total number of hours you work in two weeks. For example, if your biweekly rate is $1,000 and you work 80 hours in two weeks, your hourly rate would be $12.50 (1,000 ÷ 80).
Monthly Salary to Hourly Wage:
To convert a monthly salary to an hourly wage, divide your monthly salary by the average number of hours you work in a month. Typically, a month is 173.33 hours (40 hours × 4.33 weeks). For example, if your monthly salary is $2,000, your hourly wage would be about $11.55 (2,000 ÷ 173.33).
Annual Salary to Hourly Wage:
To convert an annual salary to an hourly wage, divide your annual salary by the total number of hours you work in a year. Typically, there are 2,080 hours worked in a year (40 hours × 52 weeks). For example, if your annual salary is $50,000, your hourly wage would be $24.04 (50,000 ÷ 2,080).
